Adele Cracks Open Her 'Heartbroken Soul' at Somerset House Summer Series

Jeremy Singer | 07.23.2008

British singing sensation Adele, who describes her style as “heartbroken soul,” performed to a capacity crowd Saturday, July 19 at the Somerset House Summer Series in London―quite a change from the crowd she may have drawn as a relative unknown a year ago.

Things have changed dramatically for this graduate of the BRIT School, which also groomed singers Amy Winehouse and Kate Nash. This past December, Adele became the recipient of the Brit Awards’ inaugural Critics Choice award, given to artists who, at the time, have yet to release an album.

But release an album Adele did. In January, 19 debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. album chart and has since been certificated platinum with sales over 500,000 copies.

Adele has been on a sold-out U.K. tour and has been nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, which will be awarded in London on September 9.

Check out Adele’s new single “Cold Shoulder,” out now:

Adele is pictured on-stage at the Somerset House with an Epiphone Masterbilt acoustic guitar and an Epiphone El Capitan bass guitar, which she used for part of her set. Adele’s guitarist Ben Thomas is photographed with a Gibson ES-335.
