New Takes on Old Turnarounds

This is an important subject. Too many guitar players fall into ruts or bad habits when they get all-too familiar with licks that they play almost with no thought involved. This is what starts to happen with the mundane and plain old “turnaround” licks so many are guilty of overplaying.

As a result, I’ve come to the rescue here with many alternatives that are really quite cool. These licks are not only useful as turnarounds, but should become a permanent part of your normal lick or riff repertoire.

For this reason, I will demonstrate these licks in their familiar “turnaround territory,” as well as show you how they can become part of a solo, or a normal run. Hybrid picking and fingerpicking will also be illustrated, as many of these positions “jump” or “split” strings. Enjoy!—Arlen Roth
